By restoring the site, the city of Warstein is helping to further increase the bog’s CO2 storage capacity. Intact bogs absorb precipitation like sponges, thereby protecting against flooding during high water. They also store even more CO2 than forests can. Biodiversity is also being enhanced. There is a lookout point at the raised bog; the bog itself is considered a highly sensitive natural area and must not be entered.
